The Enfield 8000 electric car which was designed and conceived on the Isle of Wight. Prototypes and the initial production was started here but then a labour dispute resulted in the body production line being transferred to the Greek Island of Syros. The Enfield 8000 as produced was constructed from 1975 to 1976. Considered by many to be the first modern day commercially available production electric car. It was a bold attempt to make a proper car when batteries were still rather heavy and old fashioned. Remarkably 120 units were made and sold both in the UK and abroad. Units are known to have sold and survived in Australia, South Africa and other countries around the world. Currently there are known to be about three which are road legal in the UK and a handful elsewhere in the world with a number of cars being actively worked on to return to full working order as well.
This Enfield website was first published in 2016 to bring together a self help forum of like minded enthusiast owners of vehicles to share information so that the complete lack of a Haynes type manual did not stop the restoration progress of the cars within the group. This has developed into a Register which aims to record the history and fate of the production vehicles of both the Enfield 465 and 8000 varieties and the historical background information. This has resulted in what you see on this website. The Register is gradually getting a comprehensive collection of technical paperwork both from original sources and from our members input as they find ways of solving the restoration issues they encounter. The Register also collects any image of ours cars and adds them to our database of vehicles but due to copyright issues these are not able to be displayed online.
